TransAqua serves the three area Municipalities of Moncton, Dieppe and Riverview with a major
network of collector sewers, Wastewater Pumping Stations, a Wastewater Treatment Facility and
a Composting Facility. TransAqua is responsible for the environmental stewardship associated
with wastewater treatment, planning and regulatory requirements and is continuously supporting
regional planning, economic development and quality of life for the communities of Moncton,
Dieppe and Riverview. Its mission is “To collect and treat wastewater in a reliable, cost-efficient

equal opportunity Employer that currently has a vacancy for a Class 3 WWT Operator-in-Training
position to begin full time employment on January 6, 2025.


Job Overview:


Reporting directly to the Operations Manager, the Class 3 WWT Operator-in-Training is
responsible for the operational performance of the Wastewater Treatment Plant and Collection
System (WWTF) and remote lift stations. This person is also responsible for ensuring work is
carried out safely, properly, efficiently, effectively, economically and in accordance with all
pertinent legislation, regulations, policies and standard operating procedures This position, as
does all team members carries with it a responsibility to nurture, promote and champion
TransAqua’s safety program.


Employees at this classification also have a greater responsibility for contingency planning and
emergency preparedness activities, program planning and development, planning and delivery of
more complex projects, detailed reporting and oral presentation of conclusions, and developing a
knowledge base of emerging technologies.


This position is learning and experience oriented leading to 2 years of direct responsible charge
experience (can be included in the overall 4 years of experience); 2 years or 90 CEUs of post
high school training or education in the wastewater field, engineering or related science, with
direct charge hours to be approved by the Operations Manager, prior to challenging the Class 3
WWT Certification Exam.


This position, as does all team members, carries with it a responsibility to nurture, promote and
champion TransAqua’s safety program.


Key Accountabilities:

  • Operate unit operations and processes of the Wastewater Treatment Facility, Collection
    System and remote lift stations in coordination with operators.
  • Plans, organizes and coordinates work activities related to wastewater collection,
    transmission and treatment in support of operational goals and objectives.
  • Coordinate and perform collector system inspections such as flap gates, baffle
    chambers, manholes and compost toilets.
  • Understands how assigned projects from the Operations Manager relate to wastewater
    objectives and provide input into the development of future wastewater initiatives.
  • Sets an example for professional accountability.
  • Organizes resources to carry out planned service activities.
  • Coordinate operational and maintenance activities with all areas involved.
  • Instruct and guide staff in the delivery of services with input and support from the
    Operations Manager.
  • Attends all planning and operations team meetings and emphasizes the importance of
    effective teamwork.
  • Participates in contingency planning and emergency preparedness activities.
  • Assists the Operations Manager in directing emergency response operations in
    accordance with plans and established procedure to ensure the GMWC systems are
    fully functional.
  • Utilize the Computerized Maintenance Management System ensuring all preventative
    maintenance activities are scheduled, completed on time and are recorded.
  • Assists the Operations Manager in the development and delivery of training courses.
  • Respond/inform/coordinate actions required to address improper operations identified
    during daily checks or alarms generated by the SCADA.
  • Assist the Operations Manager with the purchase of process equipment, materials, fuel,
    chemicals, etc.
  • Coordinate with on-call personnel to develop and post the on-call list for the calendar
    year.
  • Serve as duty operator on the regular plant on-call schedule.
  • Assist in the preparation of the emergency contact sheet for staff, area municipalities
    and septage haulers;
  • Assist in the preparation of monthly reports of operations and maintains adequate
    records as required;
  • Assist in the development of operations and maintenance manuals and the Emergency
    Preparedness and Response Plan.
  • Lead the development, review and maintenance of Standard Operating Procedures and
    Material Safety Data Sheets with personnel.
  • Conduct tours of the facility as per schedule.
  • Perform all work in conformance to Occupational Safety and Health Act regulations.
  • Assist the Operations Manager to oversee work by local contractors hired to carry out
    work for GMWC. Review and confirm the accuracy of the contractor timesheets,
    material quantities and submit to the Operations Manager.
  • Provide direction or supervision when working at the wastewater treatment facility or
    collector system when the work requires more than one person, including other
    operators and/or maintenance personnel.
  • Maintain open communications with the Operations Manager regarding wastewater
    treatment processes and collector system operations, make recommendations for
    repairs and improvements.
  • Participates in special projects as assigned.
  • Complete the required training and challenge the Class III WWT Certified Operator
    Certification Exam when the certification requirements have been met.

Working Conditions:


TransAqua offers the following working conditions and benefits:


Employees are required to work 8-hour shifts from Monday to Friday between 7:00 am and
5:00pm and scheduled and unscheduled overtime. At times WWT Maintenance personnel
perform strenuous physical labour for extended periods of time requiring physical strength and
endurance. Other working conditions include lifting heavy loads, performing tasks in high or
confined areas, moving on rough or unsteady surfaces, and making repetitive movements such
as bending or lifting. Employees are exposed to a variety of weather conditions (e.g., rain, snow
and extremes of heat and cold), construction sites, heavy traffic, vibration, noise, dust, chemicals,
a variety of construction materials, paint, grease, oil, noxious odours, fumes and potentially
hazardous materials.

Essential and Desirable Qualifications:
The preferred candidate:

  • Post–secondary education in any trade or technical field relevant to GMWC operations.
  • Minimum two (2) years of related workplace experience.
  • Class 2 WWT AND Class 2 WWC Certification.

 

The following certifications are considered to be an asset:

  • 2 years of Direct Responsible Charge experience.
  • Confined Space Entry and Rescue Certification.
  • WHMIS Certification.
  • Emergency First Aid / CPR Certification.
  • Operating heavy equipment.
  • Fall Arrest Certification.
  • Demonstrated ability to liaise with and manage key relationships.
  • Sound understanding of risk management.
  • High level of integrity, confidentially, and accountability.
  • Sound analytical thinking, planning, prioritization, and execution skills.
  • A well-defined sense of diplomacy and conflict resolution.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; a persuasive and passionate
    communication with excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Bilingual – French/English is considered an asset.
